Description
Platypus
Name: Ornithorhynchus anatinus
It is unique to Australia and it’s habitat ranges from the tropical parts of North Queensland to the cold areas of Tasmania, generally on the eastern side of the continent. Platypus build their burrows above the waterline of creeks, rivers and lakes, where it lives on a diet of fresh water crayfish, shrimps and insects.
It’s a monotreme, an egg-laying mammal, that has a bill, like a duck, and no teeth. The bill is soft, with receptors that detect electrical currents, that allow it to find its food in water. Adults weigh 1 to 1.5kg and are 40 to 50 cm long. It has a broad flat tail, stout legs and webbed front feet.
Status:
Shy in the wild and difficult to find but fortunately now common. They were once hunted for their fur but are now protected.
