Approximately 70% of Australia is arid. This vast unique and ancient land is called the ‘Outback’. There is no wet or dry season. Rain falls occasionally, usually as a result of storms which may flood large areas. With rain, the Outback transforms from harsh and dry to a beautiful landscape covered with flowers and plants supporting an amazing variety of insects, birds and many unique amphibians, reptiles and marsupials. 

Status

Some areas remain under threat from land clearing, mining and pastoralism. We still have too little scientific knowledge available to fully understand the ecology of the outback.
