Description
Meerkats
Name: Suricatta
Habitat:
All three subspecies are found in southern Africa living in and around the vast Kalahari desert. They are very social animals, living in groups or ‘gangs’ with up to 25 individuals sharing the same burrow and with at least one acting as a sentry during the day to warn the group of potential danger.
Meerkats are a type of Mongoose, but unlike most of their cousins they hunt and forage during the day. Their diet consists mainly of insects, small mammals, lizards and some plants. They have short legs and long thin bodies. Sharp curved claws allow them to burrow and dig into the sand and soil.
Status:
Meerkats thrive in the wild and are not endangered.
