The platypus is a unique Australian animal found in unique parts of Eastern Australia. The live near freshwater lakes, rivers, where the water is still and can create burrows and hollows for food and shelter for protection and breeding.
They are mostly nocturnal animals, moving around at night, and have unique webbed feet for swimming. When they swim they make sure to keep there eyes closed, and can swim for up to two minutes before returning to the waters surface to breathe. They have been observed to be able to stay underwater for over ten minutes, and have a internal buoyancy that they have naturally evolved that allows them to be underneath other objects, and retain understanding of their location under water.
The Australian Platypus has a soft coat that feels like wool, and they can range anywhere from thirty to fifty centimeters in length and the tail an additional ten to fifteen centimeters, meaning they can get up to seventy centimeters long! Now thats a big Platypus!
The platypus has several layers to keep itself warm, with the first layer of fur, keeping the animal warm from the cold waters, by trapping the air, and keeping the water away from the skin. The 2nd layer provides a form of insulation for the coat, with a layer of tough fat built up over the summer period, and a final 3rd layer of long flat hairs to detect objects close by, and gain itself orientation, as mentioned before, when underwater with its eyes closed.
The Australian Platypus can live for many years, however its averaged lifespan may be shortened by natural predators such as deadly Australian Snakes, Goannas, and Introduced species to Australia, such as rats and foxes. Another major, and very dangerous thread, is man, via waterway pollution, or large clearing of the native lands, changing river courses.
The platypus diet includes insect larvae, worms or other freshwater insects. They do so mainly at night, with worms of other freshwater insects. They use their bills to poke around in the mud and disturb the bottom of the lake or river bed, and with a special sensor on their bill, find many insects and freshwater insects. They store their findings in special ouches behind their bill.
